Thornton Hall Hotel goes back to Tudor times

St George’s Day falls on 23rd April each year but is not the big occasion that patron saint days are in Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Thornton Hall Hotel is campaigning for St George’s Day to be as widely recognised as these other patron saint days and this will be seen by the £70 St George’s flag flying at the front of the hotel! Thornton Hall Hotel, one of the best hotels on Merseyside, is celebrating St George’s Day in style this year with its head chef preparing a Tudor feast!

A typical Tudor St George’s Day feast would have included air dried salted cod, whole spit roasted boar, pastries made from honey and gooseberries. However, Thornton Hall has created a modern day menu for St Georges Day 08.

This includes a starter of poached chicken balonteen, main course of poached salted cured cod and a summer pudding for dessert. These are all complimented with vegetables and herbs or spices that would have been available in traditional Tudor times.

Thornton Hall Hotel head chef, Hywel Griffith said he was delighted to have the opportunity to create this interesting Tudor menu.

“It is very interesting to discover the types of foods that would have been eaten in Tudor times. I have had great pleasure in creating recipes suitable for a modern day twist on the traditional Tudor feast and I look forward to hearing feedback from our customers on St George’s Day!”
